We travelled to the River Teno courtesy of the Finnish Tourist Board which publishes an excellent comprehensive brochure on angling throughout the country. It contains details on a range of packages and destinations from accredited local operators. Or check out www.finland.com.
As a general guide a short-stay independent visit including flights, car hire, accommodation, permits and boat hire may cost from around £1000 per head based on four sharing transport and a self-catering chalet. Some package operators may offer better deals.
Flights:
Finnair flies direct to Helsinki from Edinburgh. Online booking and prices at www.finnair.com
Accommodation:
Nuorgam Lomakeskus Holiday Resort offers chalet cottages from £34-£50 per night (2007 summer season prices) and has an English website or email Marjatta Holmberg at nuorgamin.lomakeskus@luukku.com. She issues permits and will organise local guides if necessary.
The Hotel Luossajohka overlooking the Utsjoki river – a major tributary of the Teno – specialises in fishing holidays. A bed and breakfast in a twin room costs from £65 per person per night.
Fishing Permits:
Often included in package deals, but also available from a range of local outlets. The salmon season runs from 5 June to 20 August. Download a detailed guide in English to the river.
Two types are needed: (1) a general management fee which costs £4.00 for a week and (2) a daily permit which starts at 7pm. The daily rates range from £14.00 bank only to £24.00 for a licence covering both bank and boat fishing.
Only local guides are permitted to take boats into the Alaköngäs rapids; a guide will charge around £30.00 daily for rowing and hire of boat and equipment. No fishing from 7 pm on Sunday to 7 pm on Monday.
