The Sunday Herald&#8217;s environment editor Rob Edwards reported on an <a title=\"Sunday Herald\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/transport-environment\/salmon-farmer-facing-prosecution-after-pesticide-kills-thousands-of-fish-1.1057517\" target=\"_blank\">alleged pesticide incident<\/a> in which it was said that thousands of farmed salmon had been killed by an accidental overdose on a Shetland site.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_563\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-563\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/btl.longlinemedia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/fishfarm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-563\" title=\"Salmon farming\" src=\"https:\/\/btl.longlinemedia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/fishfarm.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/btl.longlinemedia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/fishfarm.jpg 484w, https:\/\/btl.longlinemedia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/fishfarm-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aquaculture industry facing reliability issues<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The story claims environmental protection agency SEPA is investigating the report which may result in prosecution for the farming company involved, and a further blow to the reliability profile of the aquaculture industry..<\/p>\n<p>Edwards claims up to 20,000 fish may have died as a result of the pesticides intended to kill sea lice and other parasites which infest marine cages with consequential threats to wild fish in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a title=\"Sunday Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thesundaytimes.co.uk\/sto\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sunday Times<\/a> says undersea cables linking offshore windfarms to the national grid, could pose a risk to marine species such as salmon and sea trout.<\/p>\n<p>The story highlights a warning from the <a title=\"AST subsea cable warning\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticsalmontrust.org\/latest-news\/ast-quoted-in-sunday-times-103.html\" target=\"_blank\">Atlantic Salmon Trust<\/a>, the leading environmental charity, that magnetic fields generated by the subsea cables may interfere with the salmon&#8217;s migration patterns and ability to navigate home to spawn in Scottish rivers<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SALMON, wild and farmed, crept on to the menus two of the Sunday papers this week.
