{"id":639,"date":"2009-11-27T14:19:14","date_gmt":"2009-11-27T13:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bxttlines.wordpress.com\/?p=639"},"modified":"2009-11-27T14:19:14","modified_gmt":"2009-11-27T13:19:14","slug":"garry-dog-at-last-the-fly-tier-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/btl.longlinemedia.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/11\/27\/garry-dog-at-last-the-fly-tier-revealed\/","title":{"rendered":"Garry Dog &#8211; at last, the fly-tier revealed!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IT DIDNT take too long since my last article, to track down the elusive fly-tyer credited with creating one of Scotland\u2019s most famous salmon patterns, the Garry Dog.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as the Minister\u2019s Dog, Yellow Dog or simply Garry, a chance meeting with the grandson of a Borders\u2019 minister, brought me the <a title=\"Tail of Garry, the dog\" href=\"http:\/\/bxttlines.wordpress.com\/2009\/11\/13\/the-tale-of-garry-the-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\">background<\/a> to the creation of this celebrated fly.   And even a picture of Garry, the dog, whose hair was snipped off for the very first version.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_633\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-633\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/btl.longlinemedia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/garrydog50-60s1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-633  \" title=\"GarryDog50-60s\" src=\"https:\/\/btl.longlinemedia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/garrydog50-60s1.jpg\" alt=\"Garry Dog - also called the Minister's Dog\" width=\"201\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Garry Dog - as tied in the 1950s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the identity of the creator still remained a mystery. Until today, when we can reveal that the Garry Dog was first tied in the Tweedside town of Kelso by local tackle dealer, John Wright, during the 1920s.<\/p>\n<p>Colin Martin, grandson of the Rev Denholm Fraser, the Sprouston  minister from 1903 to the late 1930s, who still has a picture of Garry, the dog, couldn\u2019t remember the name of the fly dresser, but canvassed members of his family to gather the information.<\/p>\n<p>According to Colin, Wright\u2019s father James, another fly-tyer of note, was credited with creating the Durham Ranger, although some sources claim this was the work of Walton Scruton, a Durham man, but member of the Sprouston angling club in 1845. It is also attributed to another club member, William Henderson.<\/p>\n<p>Now we know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum:<\/strong> John Gray of <a title=\"Grays of Kilsyth\" href=\"http:\/\/www.graysofkilsyth.com\" target=\"_blank\">Gray&#8217;s of Kilsyth<\/a> points out that James Wright was the creator of one of the most popular flies of all time &#8211; <a title=\"Greenwell's Glory, opens in new window\" href=\"\/\/www.trout-salmon-fishing.com\/trout-flies.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Greenwell&#8217;s Glory<\/a>, first dressed in 1854 for Canon William Greenwell, of Durham.\u00a0 Thanks, John.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IT DIDNT take too long since my last article, to track down the elusive fly-tyer credited with creating one of Scotland\u2019s most famous salmon patterns, the Garry Dog.
